KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) — The National Transportation Safety Board has released its preliminary report into the September plane crash on the Outer Banks that killed five people, including a 6-year-old child.
The NTSB says the pilot of the Cirrus Design Corp SR22 plane didn’t send any distress signals before the crash into the tree line near First Flight Airport in Kill Devil Hills at 5:18 p.m. It happened about eight minutes after takeoff on September 28, while the pilot made a second approach on the runway at First Flight.
The report doesn’t provide many additional details into the cause, but noted that the crash and subsequent explosion and fire destroyed most of the cockpit equipment on board.
The five people killed in the crash were:
- Shashwat Ajit Adhikari, 31, of Silver Spring, Maryland
- Jason Ray Campbell, 43, of Southern Pines, North Carolina
- Kate McAllister Neely, 39, of Southern Pines, North Carolina
- Matthew Arthur Fassnacht, 44, of Marietta, Georgia
- A 6-year-old child was also killed in the crash.
