Idalia impact on North Carolina school schedules 

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – With Hurricane Idalia expected to bring strong, potentially tropical storm force, winds and heavy rain to northeast North Carolina, several school systems are adjusting their schedules as a precaution.

10 On Your Side has confirmed the following changes. We will continue to update this post with any new information from local school districts.

Bertie County, NC

All Bertie County schools will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 31. All afterschool activities are canceled Wednesday afternoon.

Camden County, NC

Camden County Schools will be closed Thursday due to impending weather from Idalia and concern with potential flooding and wind gusts. It said a decision on Friday would be made after lunch Thursday.

College of the Albemarle

All College of the Albemarle campuses will be closed Thursday, with all classes and activities canceled. Students will not have in-person or web conferencing classes Thursday, and employees will not be required to report. It said a decision on Friday operations will be announced as soon as possible.

Currituck County, NC

Currituck County Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday, while students at JP Knapp Early College will have a remote learning day Thursday and no school Friday. It said afterschool activities would go on as scheduled.

Dare County, NC

Dare County announced that Thursday, Aug. 31 will be a remote learning day due to severe weather, and Friday, Sept. 1 will be an optional workday, not a student day. It said that students and staff will receive further instructions from their school Wednesday.

It said that based on information from the National Weather Service’s 6 p.m. Tuesday webinar, Idalia is on the same path to pass south of Cape Hatteras, and “it appears the storm will slow after moving off the coast (and) rainfall estimates have increased.”

It said ocean over wash estimates have increased from one to three feet.

Edenton-Chowan Schools in NC

Due to debris and ponding in the roadways, Edenton-Chowan schools will be closed Thursday, August 31 for students and 10-month employees and will operate on a remote learning day. Students are expected to complete activities assigned by their teachers and return them to be counted as present.

Elizabeth City – Pasquotank Public Schools in NC

Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools announced that due to the potential impacts from Hurricane Idalia, they will operate on a remote learning day on Thursday, August 31. School facilities will be closed for all students and staff. Students have the option of accessing remote learning on their personal devices or continue working on assignments when they return to school. Students who do not have access to a device or internet will not be penalized. 

Elizabeth City State University in NC

Due to inclement weather forecasts, all non-mandatory operations at Elizabeth City State University are suspended, starting Thursday. It said all classes would operate remotely Thursday, and it asks students and employees to watch ECSU ALERT, WRVS FM 89.9 and their email for updates.

It said campus dining locations will operate during normal hours Thursday and asked Hampton Inn and Mid-Atlantic Christian University students taking classes at ECSU to monitor their email for further instsruction.

The university said it would make a decision about Friday operations sometime Thursday. Essential employees are to report to work, while non-essential employees will work remotely Thursday.

Campus events taking place after 5 p.m. Wednesday have been suspended and will be rescheduled.

The university will remain open under Condition 1 of the adverse weather policy from Wednesday through 6 a.m. Friday — meaning it will stay open but may have reduced non-mandatory operations due to limited staffing.

Gates County, NC

Gates County Public Schools has announced that due to the possibility of inclement weather Thursday, all schools along with New Beginning Daycare will be closed for students. Staff will have an optional workday.

Hertford County Schools, NC

HCPS will be closed Thursday, August 31, 2023 for students, with an optional workday for staff due to the weather.

Northampton County, NC

Northampton County announced its schools will close at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 due to pending inclement weather from Idalia. They’ll also have a two-hour delay in the morning on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Perquimans County

Perquimans County Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 31, with a 2-hour delay optional workday for staff.
