3 arrested after high speed pursuit in Gates; 4th suspect gets away

GATES COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — Gates County deputies have made three arrests and are still searching for a fourth suspect after a high speed pursuit.

Around 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, deputies received a call about a suspicious vehicle at the China King on US-158 and Soney Lane.


When a deputy arrived at the scene, the people inside the vehicle took off, officials say. This led to a high-speed pursuit until the driver of the vehicle tried to make a sharp turn and crashed at US-158 and Clay Hill Road.

One person was arrested at the scene and there was a manhunt for the three others inside the vehicle. Two of the suspects were later taken into custody.

Those arrested were Stephen Ackerman, Kashawn Smith, and Mark Claudio. The fourth suspect has not been identified at this time.

Ackerman has been charged with felony identity theft, felony possession with intent to sell and/or deliver a schedule VI controlled substance, felony maintaining a vehicle for the sale and/or delivery of a controlled substance and other misdemeanors.

Stephen Ackerman

Smith was charged with felony possession with intent to sell and/or deliver a schedule VI controlled substance, felony maintaining a vehicle for the sale and/or delivery of a controlled substance and other misdemeanors.

Kashawn Smith

Claudio was charged with felony flee to elude, felony possession with intent to sell and/or deliver a schedule VI controlled substance, felony maintaining a vehicle for the sale and/or delivery of a controlled substance and other misdemeanors.

Gates County Deputies are being assisted by Rangers from Mill Pond State Park, N.C. Highway Patrol and K-9 units from Hertford County.
