Man accused of Elizabeth City murder found dead in apparent suicide

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – A 21-year-old man accused of murdering a 42-year-old man on Chappell Garden Drive in 2023 has died of an apparent suicide, detectives said.

According to officials, 21-year-old Gabriel Boyd Sellers was found unresponsive at Central Prison just after 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 8. Prison staff attempted to perform life-saving procedures, but Sellers was pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m.


Detectives said Sellers was a pre-trial offender facing charges of murder and assault for an incident that occurred in Pasquotank County.

On May 24, 2023, around 9:15 p.m., 42-year-old David Reider Geyer was found dead in the 100 block of Chappell Garden Drive. A search warrant was obtained for Sellers, who, at the time, lived in the same home as Geyer.

The incident remains under investigation, and the Department of Adult Correction is said to be cooperating fully.
