GATE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — Eight people were taken to the hospital Monday night after a van crashed in Gates County.

Dale Gauding, senior communications advisor for Sentara Healthcare, said the trauma center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital received one patient via Nightingale.

State Police confirmed the person who was airlifted had facial reconstructive surgery Tuesday.

The other seven passengers in the van were taken to the hospital by ambulance. All are expected to survive.

Investigators with State Police determined that two cars traveling southbound on NC-32 were stopped behind a car that was waiting to turn left into a driveway. That’s when the van, driving from Virginia to Elizabeth City, reportedly failed to stop and hit the line of cars. This caused part of the van to end up in the northbound lanes, causing another crash.

The driver of the van was charged with no operators license and left of center, for crossing the center line.

In all, State Police say five vehicles were involved in this crash.
