NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — School officials in Norfolk plan to hold a meeting Monday evening to consider consolidating two schools
Norfolk Public Schools leaders may consolidate Fairlawn Elementary School and Poplar Halls Elementary School and make one Kindergarten through 8th grade program at Lake Taylor Middle School.
The district’s website shows the student population for both Fairlawn and Lake Taylor has declined over the last five years. However, enrollment for Poplar Halls Elementary increased by 11 percent over the last five years.
School board members said they needed to address declining enrollment in all Norfolk Public Schools. Over the last nine years, 4,000 fewer children enrolled in Norfolk Public Schools.
That number may drop more over the next 10 years.
Board members plan to talk about facility improvements at Lake Taylor Middle School, transportation, and curriculum for a K-8 school.
Monday’s meeting is scheduled to take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lake Taylor.
