NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — After a fatal crash in June and a slew of other incidents, residents on one Newport News street are calling for a change.

Wedgewood Drive North and Saunders Road is a busy intersection, but neighbors said it’s also dangerous, telling 10 On Your Side about the many crashes, happening here.

“All through here there’s like accidents all the time,” resident Sherri Adams said.

“They widen that whole road or put a stop light there, cause somebody is going to get killed,” said resident Floyd Ferrell.

The issue hits close to home for Marissa Hickmott, whose home has been hit by a vehicle several times this year alone. Just a few days ago, a neighbor’s doorbell camera caught a crash on video.

“A good chunk of our main fence that’s facing the road that got taken out,” said Hickmott, “Hearing and feeling the house shake that definitely puts my life in danger because who knows what’s gonna happen next.”

Neighbors have joined forces, taking their concerns to the city of Newport News in hopes they’ll intervene.

“It’s speeding, it’s people not paying attention, the ditches there’s like no road, there’s barely any road people are falling off into the ditch,” Adams said. “If speed bumps could slow people down or anyway to widen the road or fix the ditches something anything.”

A statement sent to the 10 on Your Side Newsroom from the city of Newport News states:

“A citizen reported their concerns yesterday to our 311 center. A traffic study was requested in the area of Saunders Road and Wedgewood Road. Radar equipment was installed this morning. Our engineering department will perform a traffic study to determine volumes, speeds, and crash history in the specified area. There are also two other safety-related projects taking place now on Saunders Road unrelated to this complaint.”
