NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A new tradition is heading for Newport News, and while it may not include fireworks like Hollydazzle, city officials think it’ll still have that wow factor.
“I think there might be a little trepidation with folks who are used to having Hollydazzle and the fireworks around the fountain, but I think once the experience it they won’t like it til they like it. I think it requires that experience and that’s really what the show is about, becoming engaged,” said Shelly Ezanno, superintendent of special events and promotions.
It’s called the Bayport Credit Union 25 Nights of Northern Lights.
It’s a new, state-of-the-art synchronized music and light show, and it features a big pine pixel tree that’s unique to Hampton Roads.
“What we really did, we shook that snow globe and brought your imagination to life. We take you through candy cane lane, gingerbread forest, and we’ve created a light show experience that doesn’t exist anywhere in Virginia,” explained the man behind the show, senior business development director of RWS Entertainment Group, Kevin Kreczko .
The first three Saturdays of the month will feature special holiday activities and every other evening, at the top of the hour, from 6- 10 p.m. will be a light show.
Locals tell 10 On Your Side they’re excited to participate.
“I would be very open to seeing how it would work and do something different. I think it may even bring more people out here,” said local Cindy Davis.
“I didn’t even know it wasn’t the Hollydazzle anymore but honestly I’m excited,” added Newport News resident Chelsea Sweeney.
The man behind the show says people can expect a 5 sense experience.
“You’re going to see the North Pole, you’re going to taste Mrs. Claus’ cookies and you’re going to feel that holiday magic,” stated Kreczko .
Interactive bracelets will be first come first serve for the light show every Saturday.
It all kicks off Saturday at 5 p.m.
