RODANTHE, N.C. (WNCN) — Officials at the North Carolina coast deployed emergency measures Monday after a fiber optic line was cut on Pea Island at the Outer Banks. Dare County officials said 911 services were impacted on Hatteras Island.
Fire and rescue officials said the line was cut near the Pea Island Visitor Center early Monday afternoon — a day after dunes in the same spot were washed away causing N.C. 12 flooding.
Crews worked on Sunday and Monday to restore the dunes. Some wiring was seen exposed along the beach after oceanfront dunes were obliterated by high surf Sunday — but it’s not clear if those were fiber optic lines that were cut.
Emergency crews deployed two Compact Rapid Deployable cell towers and internet access points for cellular, wired Internet, and wi-fi coverage, according to Chicamacomico Banks Fire & Rescue.
Fire and rescue crews said that effort would allow some 911 calls to get through to Rodanth, Waves and Salvo — known locally as the Tri-Villages.
“If you require 911 services and are unable to get through, you will have to come to station 50/EMS station 6,” Chicamacomico Banks officials said.
