ORLANDO, Fla. (WFLA) – OneBlood is conducting a worldwide search for extremely rare blood needed by a 2-year-old south Florida child battling cancer.

Zainab is battling neuroblastoma, a very aggressive form of cancer.

Her blood is extremely rare because she is missing a common antigen called “Indian B.”

For a person to be a possible match for Zainab, they must also be missing the antigen, or her body will reject the blood.

Donors must be exclusively Pakistani, Indian or Iranian decent, meaning the donor’s parents are both 100 percent Pakistani, Indian or Iranian.

Donors also must be blood type “O” or “A.”

According to OneBlood, statistically, only four percent of eligible donors are missing the Indian B antigen.

All donations for Zainab must be coordinated with OneBlood in advance to ensure compatibility testing is performed.

So far, three matching donors have been located, including one in the United Kingdom.

OneBlood says though it’s promising three donors have been located, additional donors are needed, as Zainab will need blood transfusions in the foreseeable future.

To support her long-term blood needs, OneBlood and the American Rare Donor Program are searching for seven to 10 compatible donors.
