Postal problems persist in VA and NC, leaving residents frustrated

CORAPEAKE, N.C. (WAVY) — 10 On your side is continuing to follow problems with the post office failing to deliver mail.

Pam Thomason of Corapeake, North Carolina said she is frustrated and confused. Sending and receiving mail in her town used to be simple, she said, until USPS shut down the distribution center in Rocky Mount, NC. The mail is now being routed through Richmond.

Thomason said that her mail was not making it to its destination after the shift.

“Two letters from my sister for my daughters did not make it between October and November,” Thomason said. “And then, two weeks ago, my car registration that I paid for online with the DMV never made it.”

Upon investigation, Thomason said she spoke with the post office where someone told her that her mail never made it off the truck, and was back in Richmond.

The Richmond center was on the lead edge of a nationwide rollout to consolidate postal facilities. After mounting complaints and a scathing report from the Inspector Generalin March, a bipartisan group of Virginia Lawmakers met with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in April.

On Wednesday, 10 On Your side asked Sen. Tim Kaine for an update on any progress.

“[DeJoy] said it has been really botched,” Kaine said. “He took responsibility for it and said he now owes us. Turning that Richmond facility into a model.”

They agreed to meet again in 90 days, but a date has not yet been put on the calendar. DeJoy has agreed to pause the movement of processing operations associated with the Mail Processing Facility Reviews until after Jan. 1, 2025.

DeJoy also has said the postal service will continue to work to restore service in impacted areas.
