Massive hole swallows 2 homes in Florida

KATHLEEN, Fla. (WFLA) — Two homes were swallowed by a large hole Wednesday in a Kathleen, Florida, neighborhood in Polk County.

The wild scene raised concerns about whether the ground collapse was caused by a sinkhole or water damage from sewage issues.

The damage occurred on Willow Wisp Drive, where both home foundations caved in, leaving a large crater.

WFLA’s Georgia McCarthur reported that the homeowners were home when the ground gave way. Their belongings were scattered in portions of the yard and a yellow truck suffered extensive damage.

Neighbors said the area has faced ongoing sewage problems, and they believed the water pressure may have contributed to the collapse.

County officials have yet to confirm whether the hole was caused by water or if it’s a sinkhole. They’re investigating the cause of the incident.
