GREENVILLE, N.C. (WAVY) — A manatee was rescued near Greenville, North Carolina, on Nov. 18 after cold temperatures put the animal at risk.
Almost 10 organizations and institutions partnered to help with the rescue, according to SeaWorld Orlando, who was among the groups.
The teams successfully rescued a distressed female manatee weighing 855 pounds and
measuring almost 9 feet. The manatee, first reported in late October 2024 to the North Carolina stranding network, had been observed in distress, including listing in shallow waters.
With water temperatures in the low 60°s Fahrenheit, the manatee’s condition required
immediate intervention.
The manatee was transported to SeaWorld Orlando for rehabilitation with veterinary support during the transport.
