VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man who crashed a stolen ambulance in Virginia Beach while driving drunk is now facing a year in prison.

Theodore Gasiorowski was sentenced to the time Monday morning, and was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution.

Gasiorowski was arrested following the crash in April 2018. He pleaded guilty in June to charges of driving under the influence and grand theft.

Prosecutors said Gasiorowski stole an ambulance outside of Sentara Princess Anne Hospital’s emergency department — and drove about four miles before flipping the ambulance.

Virginia Beach police officers helped Gasiorowski escape the vehicle after he became trapped in the wreckage. It was later determined that Gasiorowski had a blood-alcohol content was between 0.24 and 0.27, prosecutors said.

According to a case summary from June, Gasiorowski said he blacked out and didn’t remember going to Sentara Princess Anne. Prosecutors said surveillance video from the hospital showed Gasiorowski take the ambulance as personnel rushed a patient inside.

The summary showed Gasiorowski falsely claimed to be an EMT.
