CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A man who admitted to killing both of his parents before trying to kill his aunt and uncle last April in Chesapeake will serve the rest of his life in prison.

A judge sentenced Steve Julian to serve life in prison, plus 18 years and an additional 40 combined suspended years.

The judge also noted when he turns 65 he will be eligible for geriatric release on December 17, 2058.

On Monday in court, 10 On Your Side learned what happened that fateful evening of April 9, 2017. The commonwealth’s attorney described the events that unfolded at his parents house.

It started when Julian shot his mother Sally in the head while doing the dishes. Julian then chased his father Clark through the house, before kicking down a door and fatally shooting him.

Police say he also went to his aunt and uncle’s house on Chadswyck Road with a gun to try to kill them as well, but was disarmed and detained by his uncle. Julian also pleaded guilty to two attempted first degree murder charges and four firearm counts.

All day on Monday, the defense argued mental illness, with witness statements from former classmates and friends who described him as loved and popular and kind.

10 On Your Side also heard from his brother and uncle, who pleaded to the court to put him behind bars for the remainder of his life because of their fear of safety, and turmoil they are left with after this tragedy.

Steven Julian did address the court in the end and expressed remorse in a letter read aloud. He took responsibility for everything and addressed his brother and aunt and uncle with hopes of forgiveness.

He thanked his uncle for not only stopping him but for saving his life, because he planned to kill himself that day.
