VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man who was previously convicted of attempted rape is now facing a decade behind bars after taking a plea deal in an attempted assault at Tidewater Community College. 

The Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that Jarod Jamale Jones was sentenced to 89 years. All but 10 years of that time was suspended as a part of the agreement.

Prosecutors said the Commonwealth’s evidence would have proven that Jarod Jamale Jones went to the a ladies gym bathroom at TCC in Virginia Beach on June 28, 2017.

There, he confronted a woman, pointed a gun a her and said, “Don’t scream.”

Prosecutors said the woman closed her eyes and screamed. Jones fled the scene.

Students and staff sheltered in place as police searched for the suspect, who was later identified as Jones. Police took Jones into custody two days later after a chase on Holland Road.

TCC released a statement in April 2017 that Jones attended classes at the college from Summer 2014 through Spring 2017.

Jones was convicted of attempted rape in 1997, and later for failing to register as a violent sex offender in 2009. He also failed to register several other times in 2017 after he was released from custody.
