NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News man was sentenced this week for more than five years in a fraud and identity theft case.

Markis Jordan Dickerson was charged for conspiring with Christopher Douglas Boone and others to get money from several financial institutions.

Federal authorities said Boone and Dickerson recruited account holders on social media, asking for access to their debit cards and ID numbers for a certain amount of time in exchange for money.

The two were then alleged to have deposited counterfeit checks into the accounts, before withdrawing cash and spending the money at retailers.

Dickerson pleaded guilty to the charges last December, and was sentenced on April 12 to five years and five months in prison.
