Man gets life in prison for woman’s 1981 stabbing death in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — 37 years after the death of their loved one, a local family gets justice.

On Thursday, a Norfolk jury convicted Daniel Johnston of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 20-year-old Donna Walker in 1981. The judge imposed their recommendation of life in prison.

Officers found Walker’s body at her apartment on Redmon Road in East Ocean View.

The case was cold until 2013, when police re-examined evidence that led them to Johnston.

At the time, he was serving time for homicide in New York and was eventually brought back to Norfolk for the case.
