CAMDEN COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – A Chesapeake man is at large after leading a Camden County sheriff’s deputy on a vehicle pursuit early Monday morning.
Sgt. B.C Henderson with the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies responded to Old Swamp Road for a report of a drunk driver at around 3:30 a.m.
26-year-old Martin Forbes Jr was driving a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup truck and had turned off Old Swamp Road onto a private asphalt drive. Forbes then made a U-turn at the cul-de-sac and began driving back toward Old Swamp, in the direction of a Camden deputy.
The deputy had stopped and positioned his patrol vehicle in the middle of the road, facing toward the cul-de-sac, and had also activated his blue flashing lights. Forbes drove off the pavement and to the right, striking the deputy’s driver’s side mirror.
Forbes then made a left onto Old Swamp Road, which became South Mills Road once he entered Currituck County. Forbes approached the Y-shaped intersection of South Mills and Northwest Backwoods Road and tried to make a left onto Northwest Backwoods. Forbes lost control of his truck, which ended up in a ditch, struck a telephone pole guy wire and totaled the truck.
Forbes fled the scene on foot after the wreck. Warrants have been taken out against Forbes for felony fleeing to elude law enforcement, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
No injuries were reported to the deputy. Stay tuned to WAVY.com for updates.
