NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY)– Newport News Police are investigating a Saturday night shooting that left a man dead.

Officers were called to the 400 block of Chalice Court at King’s Ridge Apartments at 11:42 p.m. for the report of shots fired. When officers arrived on scene they located an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

He was pronounced dead at 11:52 p.m. Police later identified the victim as 42-year-old Phillip Dewayne Murphy Jr.

People who live at the complex tell 10 On Your Side they heard a single gunshot followed by screams. Many watched from their front windows as police and EMS arrived.

One woman who lives feet away from where the man was killed told us off camera she’s lived at the complex for the last two years and moved to the area because it felt quiet and safe. She’s now planning to move out with her children.

She did not know the man who died but says her son was familiar with him because he used to buy and hand out ice cream to the children who live at King’s Ridge.

Meanwhile, a man who lives a few doors down and also did not want to be on camera told us the community keeps to themselves and said it’s unsettling that something so tragic happened at a place where young children often play.

There is no suspect information at this time.

The investigation is still ongoing.
