Man convicted of malicious wounding in shooting of off-duty jail officer

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man was convicted of a malicious wounding charge in connection to the shooting of an off-duty jail officer in Newport News in 2017.

Ronzel Dixie was found guilty of the charge during a hearing on April 11. He was found not guilty of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.


Police arrested Dixie after they were called to a shooting on Nov. 8, 2017. There, they found a 39-year-old man who had been shot multiple times.

The man, who is an employee at Hampton Roads Regional Jail, was seriously injured in the shooting.
