NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police have arrested a suspect after a teenage girl was killed in a shooting late Sunday night.
Police announced the update Monday night, but did not immediately identify the suspect.
The suspect was identified Tuesday as 20-year-old Deiontrae Bates. He was charged with second -degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony.
Police said Bates is being held at Norfolk City Jail without bond.
About 11:15 p.m. Sunday, officers found the victim shot on W. 28th Street. She was pronounced dead at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Police told 10 On Your Side the victim was a juvenile between the ages 15 and 17.
Monday afternoon, Norfolk Public Schools released the following statement:
The Norfolk Public Schools family learned today that one of its rising 11th graders was tragically killed in a shooting on Sunday night. The district finds itself again reeling from the loss of a young person whose light was extinguished far too soon. We extend our deepest condolences to all who have been affected by this incident. Counselors are available to students and staff to assist them with dealing with their grief. We are confident that the Norfolk Police Department will work to ensure those responsible for this unspeakable act, will be brought to justice. =
“It’s so sad because they haven’t even had a chance to live, they haven’t had a chance to experience life,” said neighbor James Bellamy. “I have a grandson that lives on this street, he’s like two years old. That was my main concern to make sure he’s okay.”
Bellamy says he doesn’t know the victim or her family, but what happened saddens and worries him.
“It hurts me,” he said. “That could’ve been my kid, my son, or my daughter. My heart goes out for the family.”
He says he’s lived in the neighborhood for 40 years and the violence is nothing new. Bellamy said, “It’s so sad. Iwish there’s something they could do to make the streets safer. The police are doing their job, but maybe we might need more security.”
