CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Five people, including two young children, have been displaced and a man has been charged with arson after a car fire spread to a home overnight.
Chesapeake fire officials say it happened in the 500 block of Denver Avenue just before 3 a.m.
Firefighters arrived and found a car on fire in the driveway that had spread to the home. Officials said the fire was quickly extinguished, but the home suffered significant damage.
Following an investigation, Chesapeake Fire Marshals arrested Michael Jones, 32, on four counts of arson.
10 on your side spoke with Jones’s ex-wife Maegyn Swanner who says she was inside the home with her two children when the fire moved from a car to their home.
“We went to the back door and saw the vehicle on fire and we got everyone out as quick as we could,” said Swanner. “It’s hard seeing them upset and just displaced and not having their normal daily life and routine, it’s all been taken from them.”
There were no injuries reported from the fire, and three adults and two children, ages 4 and 2 months, are getting assistance from the Red Cross.
Neighbors say they woke up to a popping sound and loud booms. The sounds woke Lauren McNamara and her husband up out of bed. Her husband grabbed a robe and made sure the family got out safely.
“There was orange, bright orange. We saw the van engulfed in flames,” said McNamara. “I am relieved everyone is okay.”
Officials say the original cause of the fire is still under investigation.
