VSP trooper struck, hurt after two-vehicle crash in York County

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia State trooper was injured after his vehicle was sideswiped in York County while on the side of the road on Wednesday morning, police said.

Around 3:15 a.m., a Virginia State Trooper notified emergency communications center that he was struck by another vehicle on I-64 at 236 mm, and was injured as a result.

Trooper B. Nicholson was stopped on the closed shoulder of the interstate and had just completed a traffic stop on another vehicle. After he re-entered his 2021 marked Ford Explorer, he was struck and sideswiped by a 2000 Ford Contour.

The owner of the Ford Contour was 63-year-old Johnnie Ray Davis.

The state vehicle had all the emergency equipment on, police said. Davis was not impaired at the time of the crash, and speed was not a contributing factor.

Davis was charged with reckless driving at the scene.

Nicholson sustained non life-threatening injuries and was taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.
