Woman killed in crash leaves behind five-year-old son

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Ashlyn Baker was a mother, sister and loved one who’s gone too soon.

On Aug. 24, Baker, 28, was riding her motorcycle along College Drive in Suffolk when she lost control and crashed.

She was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Her sister, Hailey Baker, said she was in North Carolina at the time and had to hear the news from her mom.

“I cried for probably an hour,” Hailey Baker said.

She told 10 On Your Side this loss hurts so much because of how close she was with her sister.

“We used to FaceTime almost every day, so it’s like I lost my best friend,” Hailey Baker said.

She said Ashlyn Baker had a fiery personality and was loved by so many people.

“Everybody remembers how much of a sweetheart she was, but we also like to remember that she was just really protective and I think that’s how she was as a mom too,” Hailey Baker said.

Ashlyn Baker leaves behind a five-year-old son.

A GoFundMe was set up for the sole purpose of making sure he has a bright future.

That GoFundMe has already surpassed its goal by more than $7,000.

“We just feel good knowing that if my sister’s son can’t grow up with his mom, then maybe that fund will help him get a head start,” Hailey Baker said. “We see it as a way to help my sister, Ashlyn, take care of her son one last time in her death.”

Her son is now living with his dad and stepmom.

Hailey Baker had one last message for her sister.

“I love her, and I didn’t tell her that enough,” Hailey Baker said, “but I would just tell her that I love her and she’s my best friend.”

Ashlyn Baker’s motorcycle community is holding a ride and benefit for her at noon, Sunday at Speedgearz, 212 Dorset Ave., Virginia Beach. Participants will ride to Monks Place. There will be a silent auction, raffle, bake sale and more, with the proceeds going to her family.
