WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) – The president and CEO of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation took a plea Thursday morning for improper driving instead of reckless driving.

Clifford Fleet was originally charged with one count of reckless driving after an Oct. 26, 2023 crash left William & Mary student Rosemary Raynal with serious injuries.

William & Mary announced on Nov. 11, 2023, that Raynal suffered brain trauma and other significant injuries as a result of the crash.

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, Fleet took an Alford plea, which is a guilty plea where the defendant maintains their innocence while recognizing the likelihood of a guilty verdict if brought to trial. He was fined the maximum of $500.

Fleet and other witnesses said that a sun glare on the road made it difficult to see, and stated that Fleet was going 27 miles-per-hour in a 25 mile-per-hour zone.
