WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) — The Williamsburg City Council provided an update Friday on the ongoing study of the joint school system between the City of Williamsburg and James City County.

The James City County requested a resolution on the status of the study and the City Council replied with preference of remaining in the joint school system.

The City Council did, however, acknowledge deficiencies in the current structure. These issues will be addressed in a modernized, joint operating contract, according to a release.

In the weeks ahead, the City Council will collaborate with the James City County Board of Supervisors and the Williamsburg-James City County School Board to craft a new contract for a joint school system that ensures the best possible educational opportunities and outcomes for all city and county students.

Updates regarding the negotiation are pending.
