EMPORIA, Va. (WAVY) — A 76-year-old man from Franklin died in crash in Emporia on Thursday morning, police said.

The incident happened on Route 58 around 9:50 a.m. Preliminary investigations revealed that a log truck tried to pull out of a gas station onto westbound 58. While the truck was stopped in the roadway, its trailer was struck by a Ford Escape heading east.

The driver of the Escape, Donald W. Rogers, died at the scene.

Police say neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors and all drivers were wearing their seat belts.

The crash report will be sent to the commonwealth’s attorney for review and charges are pending his determination, police say.
