NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man involved in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday on the exit ramp of Interstate 64 eastbound to I-264 in Norfolk has died, Virginia State Police said.
State Police said Austin Trevor Hale, 30, of Virginia Beach died as a result of the crash. They said that while it happened Wednesday, they were unsure of the time.
Around 7:17 p.m., a call came in of a grey 2019 Toyota 4Runner located in the wood line on the exit ramp of I-64 eastbound to I-264 westbound in Norfolk, State Police said. The caller, a friend of Hale’s, told dispatchers he was concerned for Hale’s wellbeing and safety, as he had not heard from him all day.
The caller said he had found Hale’s last known location, and routed the location back to Hale’s home, State Police said, and while looking for Hale’s vehicle on that route, the caller said he saw skid marks on the left shoulder of the interstate ramp leading into the wood line.
After stopping to take a look, the caller found a vehicle in the wood line on its side against a tree, State Police said.
Norfolk Fire-Rescue were sent to the vehicle’s location, where the driver — later identified as Hale — was found unresponsive, State Police said. They said it’s not known if alcohol or speed contributed to the cause of the crash.
