VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office created a database to post numbers on coronavirus testing and positive cases within the city jail.

The office says its database is updated weekly. You can view it here.


Eleven mass testings have been completed since June 2020.

Here is a breakdown of the most recent test results:

    *The large increase in testing and positive results reflected on the March 5 and 12, 2021, updates is a reflection of a new VBSO practice to test all newly admitted inmates for COVID-19. This also includes inmates who have been tested more than once (some blocks are being re-tested daily). Inmates may also be tested or re-tested if they develop symptoms, have been in direct contact with another inmate diagnosed with COVID-19 or are having a medical procedure.

Twenty-nine civilian staff members have reported being tested for COVID-19. Fourteen of those test results were negative and 15 were positive. Of the 15 positive cases, two remain active and 13 have been cleared by a physician and Occupational Health to return to work.

Previous point prevalence study testing results

11th point prevalence survey: The VBSO conducted its 11th point prevalence study (PPS) in partnership with the VDH on Friday, March 19, 2021, testing 1,128 inmates, deputies, civilian staff and contractors.

10th point prevalence survey: The VBSO conducted its 10th point prevalence study (PPS) in partnership with the VDH and VNG on Friday, March 5, 2021, testing 1,450 inmates, deputies, civilian staff and contractors. The results of those tests will be posted when they are processed.

Ninth point prevalence study testing: The VBSO conducted its ninth point prevalence study (PPS) in partnership with the VDH and Virginia National Guard on Friday, Feb. 19, 2021, testing 1,480 inmates, deputies, civilian staff and contractors.

Eighth point prevalence study testing: The VBSO conducted its eighth point prevalence study (PPS) in partnerships with the VDH and Virginia National Guard on Friday, Jan. 22, testing 1,505 inmates, deputies, civilian staff and contractors.

Seventh point prevalence study (PPS): The VBSO conducted its seventh point prevalence study (PPS) in partnerships with the VDH and Virginia National Guard on Wednesday, Jan. 6. They tested a total of 1,542 inmates, deputies, civilian staff and contractors.

Sixth point prevalence study (PPS): The VBSO conducted its sixth point prevalence study (PPS) on Dec. 18. 1,526 people were tested. 16 staff members (13 deputies and three civilians) and 59 inmates tested positive. Of the 59 inmates who tested positive, 54 were new positives and five previously tested positive. There were also 13 inconclusive tests (three staff and 10 inmates), according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Fifth point prevalence study testing: The VBSO conducted its fifth point prevalence study (PPS) on Friday, Dec. 4, testing 1,518 inmates, deputies, civilian staff and contractors. Two staff members (one deputy and one civilian who both work in the jail) and 45 inmates tested positive. Of the 45 inmates who tested positive, 32 were new cases and 13 previously tested positive.

Fourth point prevalence study testing: The VBSO conducted its fourth point prevalence study (PPS) in partnerships with the VDH on Friday, Nov. 20, testing 1,532 inmates, deputies and civilian staff. Of the 83 inmates who tested positive, 42 were new cases and 41 previously tested positive.

Third point prevalence study testing: The VBSO conducted its third point prevalence study (PPS) in partnerships with the VDH on Monday, Nov. 9, testing 1,584 deputies, civilians, inmates and contractors. Five staff members (four deputies and one civilian who work in the jail) and 104 inmates tested positive.

Second point prevalence study testing: The VBSO conducted its second point prevalence study (PPS) between Oct. 28-30, testing 1,521 inmates, deputies and civilian staff and contractors. Four deputies* and 70 inmates tested positive for COVID-19, which was approximately 1% of the VBSO’s 500 staff members and approximately 6% of the jail’s 1,110 inmates.  At the recommendation of the VDH, everyone was retested, with testing scheduled for the week of Nov. 9. 

First Point prevalence study testing: At the recommendation of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office conducted a COVID-19 point prevalence study (PPS) with the VDH on Wednesday, June 24, and Thursday, June 25. All VBSO appointees (518 deputies, civilians and contractors) and 988 inmates were tested for COVID-19. As of Tuesday, June 30, all tests had been processed and three appointees (two deputies and one civilian) and three inmates tested positive for COVID-19 as a result of the PPS testing and were quarantined (all were asymptomatic). There were also approximately 16 retests of appointees and inmates and all of those test results were negative.
