VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A Virginia Beach duo is the first performance at the Point Break Festival on the oceanfront. The festival is June 1 & 2, on 5th Street.
“We feel honored to be chosen. One of the two local acts,” said Jesse Chong of Ganjacat. “This is our kind of music. So for them to have this festival here in Virginia Beach, it’s thrilling for us.”
Chong and his group mate, Tim Roberts, grew up in Virginia Beach.
The duo said their first big performance will be at the festival. They’ll take the stage ahead of big artists like Sublime, Revolution, Wiz Khalifa and Stephen Marley.
“To have them all on the same stage is really exciting. They all have the same fans and it’s just going to be great,” Roberts said.
Chong and Roberts said they’ve been a part of the music industry for decades. The group was formed a couple of years ago in 2020.
They said they started writing music just for fun, until it got more than a million streams online.
The duo song a portion of a song they’ll perform at festival:
“It’s alright, we’re gonna get through it. Just listen to the music. We’ve got to keep grooving,” Chong said while singing.
He hopes the community understands why this type of event is needed in the Resort City.
“This festival belongs there in Virginia Beach. All these artists have similar themes, very positive music. Peace, love and unity,” Chong said. “And I think that’s a big part of the appeal to this music is that its’ a refuge from all this crazy stuff that’s going around.”
Ganjacat performs from 1-1:30 p.m. on June 1.
