VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A Virginia Beach-based commodore of Naval Special Warfare Group Eight was removed from his command on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Navy, Capt. Richard A. Zaszewski was relieved of his role by Rear Adm. Keith Davids on March 20, due to a “loss of confidence in his ability to command.”

Deputy commodore Capt. Stig Sanness has taken over Zaszewski’s role, and no impact to Group Eight’s mission readiness is expected in the transition.

“Navy leaders are held to high standards of personal and professional conduct,” the release stated. “They are expected to uphold the highest standards of responsibility, reliability, and leadership, and the Navy holds them accountable when they fall short of those standards.”
