Video camera catches getaway after suspected drunk driver slams into VB home

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A BMW plowed into the living room of a condominium in Virginia Beach early Sunday morning.

Officers received reports of a vehicle accident at 5:05 a.m. in the 4700 block of Kempsville Greens Parkway.

Twisted, splintered, cracked, and contorted, that’s what a BMW sedan, with a suspected drunk driver behind the wheel, did to a condo owned by Dawn Prevette and leased to a single mother. Prevette is grateful the tenant and her son spent the night elsewhere.

“But what she did tell me was that normally she sleeps on the couch down there and a friend had invited her to spend the night.” That single mom, Kelly Carr, shared a picture of the BMW on top of the couch with 10 On Your Side. With tears in her voice, Carr told WAVY she was thankful that she and her son were not home and thankful her next-door neighbor caught the getaway on a doorbell camera. The camera microphone caught an unknown passerby as he described the getaway. “They ran to the house! They’re running down the street!”

Neighbors say 23-year-old Kirill Emer was arrested after he and a passenger returned to the scene to remove the sedan’s license plates.

The next-door neighbor, Russell Pinkney, whose camera caught the getaway is also a victim in this case. His entire staircase shifted left as the car struck the attached condominium.

Jail records show Emer is charged with driving while intoxicated and no bond is permitted.

Regina Mobley: What is your message to the young people who may see this story?
Russell Pinkney: Don’t drive drunk, please. It’s just, you know, the girl next door could have been home. Thank God she wasn’t home,” the Navy veteran said.

In a brief hearing Monday, a public defender was appointed to represent Kirill in court and a bond hearing was set for Wednesday morning.

A GoFundMe account was established to help the family get back on their feet. If you are interested in helping out, click here.
