VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A suspect is dead after a shootout with police during a barricade situation in Virginia Beach.

According to police dispatch, the call for the incident came in around 9:30 p.m. Monday in the 1900 block of Decathlon Drive, near Killey Street, in the Lake Placid neighborhood of the city.

Police responded to the scene and attempted to negotiate with a lone barricaded person. Police say the suspect was inside the home with guns and threatening to harm himself and others.

Police say the suspect continually entered and exited the front door of the home brandishing different firearms and pointing them at himself.

A 10 On Your Side crew at the scene confirmed with police that the barricade ended around 1 a.m. Tuesday with gunfire exchanged between the suspect and police.

Virginia Beach police initially confirmed with 10 On Your Side that the suspect was shot by police. The suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Craig Byl, was found inside the front door of the home dead.

In a later press release, police say they believe Byl’s injuries were the result of police gunfire, however, they will wait for the official confirmation regarding the cause of his death from the Norfolk Medical Examiner.

Police say at one point there were 61 officers on scene working to resolve the situation. Of them, four officers discharged their weapons during the incident. Those four officers have been placed on administrative leave.

There were no other injuries reported and there are no threats to the public.

The VBPD Homicide Unit is conducting the criminal investigation into the case which will be turned over to the Virginia Beach Office of the Commonwealth Attorney (OCA) who will determine if there are any violations of law.

In addition to the VBPD investigation, the OCA will conduct their own parallel, independent criminal investigation. Upon conclusion of the criminal investigations, the VBPD Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct an administrative review to determine compliance with policy and training.
