VB community devastated after young man shot and killed; suspect arrested

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach community is devastated after the fatal shooting of a young man.

The shooting on Monday morning took the life of Keyshawn Woodhouse, who died at the scene. Police later announced on Tuesday afternoon that the suspect, 19-year-old Javon Pollard, of Portsmouth, was arrested in Portsmouth and charged with second-degree murder, attempted robbery, felony hit-and-run and unauthorized use of a firearm.

Police say they were able to track down the suspect’s vehicle using Flock license plate reader cameras, after it was involved in a hit-and-run at the intersection of Lynbrook Landing and Baker Road.

“This quick arrest is once again a testament to the incredible teamwork and dedication of your Virginia Beach Police Department,” Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate. “My thanks go out to our Homicide, Warrant Fugitive, and Special Investigations detectives, along with the assistance of Portsmouth PD, who were able to bring some timely closure to the family of Mr. Woodhouse.”

According to officials, around 9:40 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Fox Creek Court for reports of a shooting.

Officers arrived to the scene and found a young man suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. First responders tried to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members on scene identified him as Woodhouse.

“Yes, I’ve been here roughly around 20 years, and the neighborhood, for the most part, is really good, no problems,” a neighbor said. “But something like this happens, it’s just not good.”

WAVY obtained a copy of the criminal complaint. It says surveillance footage from the home where the shooting happened shows three men standing outside. The suspect pulls out a gun and points it at Woodhouse and says “I’m gonna need all that.” As Woodhouse tries to run into the house, the suspect fires several shots. The suspect then drives away from the scene.

The other man present at the time of the shooting told police the suspect fled in a red sedan. While fleeing the scene, police say Pollard struck a vehicle at Baker Road and Lynbrook Landing. The driver of that vehicle was injured and had to go to the hospital.

Police say Pollard was also served with unrelated warrants from Newport News and Portsmouth during his arrest. Anyone with information in the case can contact police by calling 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
