VBPD: 1 man dead after fatal crash involving cyclist near VB Oceanfront

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) is investigating a fatal crash involving a cyclist near the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

According to officials, on Oct. 13 just before 10 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of 30th Street and Arctic Avenue for the report of a crash involving a cyclist.


Officers arrived to the scene and found 37-year-old Matthew Hurley suffering from a life-threatening injury. Hurley was then taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries on Oct. 16.

An investigation revealed that Hurley was traveling west along 30th Street, where he then entered the intersection against a red traffic signal and collided with a vehicle which was traveling north along Arctic Avenue.

Police said the driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and cooperated with emergency personnel.

The incident remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time.
