UPDATE July 14, 2020: The charge against Kenneth Troy Abner has been dropped.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach detectives arrested a Virginia Beach city employee after one of his colleagues called the city’s municipal center on Thursday to report what the colleague thought was a threatening comment.
Kenneth Troy Abner, 49, was charged with one count of disturbing the peace after the incident after detectives consulted with the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. He was released on bond.
Though police say Abner posed no actual danger to city officials or workers, they say the alleged comment directed toward city officials “created fear and unease” at the municipal center, the site of last year’s mass shooting.
Police said Thursday that Abner’s colleague called into one of the buildings at the municipal center and reported what they thought was a threat, instead of calling 911.
Detectives, who interviewed the caller, didn’t share details of Abner’s alleged comment, or his employment status with the city.
In response to the call, police said there was heightened police presence at the municipal center out of an abundance of caution. No buildings were placed on lockdown.
“Understandably, there is a heightened sense of concern for employees when such instances occur,” police said. “We encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings and when hearing any communications they believe places themselves or others in danger, to notify law enforcement.”
