VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach is holding several events throughout May to mark the 5th anniversary of the mass shooting at the city’s municipal center.

The commemoration includes a moment of silence at 4:06 p.m. on May 31, the time the first 911 call went out on May 31, 2019. 12 people were killed that day by a city employee inside the municipal center’s former Building 2.

There will also be a remembrance ceremony and a dedication for the site of the future 5/31 memorial on Friday, May 31 at 4 p.m. That’s near Building 30 at 2508 Princess Anne Road. The ceremony will be livestreamed on virginiabeach.gov/media and the City’s Facebook page.

Dills Architects designed the 5/31 memorial, and it’s expected to cost about $6 million to build.

The city will also have free activities through the month through the Virginia Beach Public Library, Virginia Beach Department of Human Services, Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation, and the VB Strong Center. You can find the whole list here.
