VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a DUI driver fatally struck a 76-year-old pedestrian and seriously hurt a 79-year-old around 4 p.m. Monday at the Virginia Beach Town Center.

The crash happened at Main Street and Constitution Drive. In an update Tuesday morning, police said both women were in the crosswalk when 24-year-old Nathan Poole made a left turn in his Dodge pickup truck at the intersection onto Constitution. The intersection has a traffic light and pedestrian signals.

76-year-old Rosa Blanco was pronounced dead at the scene and 79-year-old victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police say that during the investigation, Poole indicated he was impaired, and he was eventually arrested for DUI-first offense. Police said additional charges were pending at the time.

On January 3, 2023, the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office confirmed the Grand Jury indicted Poole on the following charges: involuntary manslaughter, DUI – victim permanently impaired, and DUI.

10 On Your Side obtained a copy of the bail determinations checklist from Virginia Beach General District Court which states that Poole admitted to smoking marijuana before driving. The document also says he failed field sobriety tests after the crash.
