Kempsville High student attacked by outsiders; mother questions security

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Four people, including a minor, are facing charges after attacking a student Oct. 22 at Kempsville High School. The attack was caught on video. WAVY has confirmed with officials that none of the people arrested were students at the school.

The mother of the attacked student spoke with 10 On Your Side about the incident.

“To see the way that my daughter was attacked and jumped and punched so many times, I was infuriated,” she said.

Her daughter suffered a concussion and a busted lip. Perhaps the most shocking detail is the fact that the other people involved in the fight were not Kempsville High School students.

“I was told that the other students must’ve let these students in and that’s how they got in,” the mother said.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools said that they are aware of the situation and that they are investigating.

Virginia Beach Police provided an update on their investigation into the incident:

“On October 22, 2024, a Virginia Beach Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) was alerted to a physical altercation that occurred at Kempsville High School. On October 25, 2024, four suspects were identified and arrested. the following individuals face charges related to this incident:

• Ashlynn James (F/18) of Virginia Beach: charged with conspiracy to commit trespassing on school property, trespassing, assault by mob, and simple assault.

•Jalaaiyah Rucker (F/18) of Norfolk: charged with conspiracy to commit trespassing on school property, trespassing, assault by mob, and simple assault.

•Kina Pass-Cutler (F/18) of Norfolk: charged with conspiracy to commit trespassing on school property, trespassing, and assault by mob.

•Female Juvenile (17): charged with conspiracy to commit trespassing on school property and assault by mob.

The mother said police has done their part, and she wants to see more done by the school.

“Seeing that this can just happen, students can just walk in without the security doing their proper security checks, it just puts all of our kids in danger,” the mother said. “I know that every parent expects their child to go to school and have a safe environment and come home.”

The mother is still waiting on an update from the school as to how those students got inside and what, if any, security changes will be made.
