VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The 75th anniversary of NATO is this year, and to celebrate, various US military display teams and international display teams will be participating in an airshow over the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
The show is one of several stops for the Italian Air Force’s Freece Tricolori, who are currently on a North American Tour. This year’s visit is the teams first time in the United States since 1992.
The team operates the Aermacchi MB-339-A/PAN, a two-seat fighter-trainer craft. With a total of 10 aircraft as part of the display, the team is the largest aerobatic team in the world. Their display includes nine aircraft flying in formation and one solo aircraft performing loops, rolls and crossing maneuvers.
The F-22 Raptor Demo Team from Langley AFB in Hampton and the US Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet Demo Team from VFA-106 at NAS Oceana will also be participating.
The public viewing area will run from around 18th Street to Neptune’s Park at 31st Street. The show will run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
It is likely that boating restrictions will be in place during the event to ensure a safe operating area for the jets. If you plan to watch the event from a boat, make sure to check for any restrictions.
The event is being put on by the Air Dot Show Tour, a group who hosts airshows across the country.
“The Air Dot Show Tour is honored to be a part of NATO’s 75th anniversary celebration,” said Chris Dirato, Director of Public Relations. “The Joint-Power Demonstration on August 21st will feature the Italian Air Force Frecce Tricolori. The team is touring North America for the first time in more than 30 years. After performing at Virginia Beach, they will make their final U.S. appearance at the OC Air Show in Ocean City, Maryland, August 24-25. We’re so excited to partner with NATO for this special show.”
