VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Sixteen apartments have been damaged following a 2-alarm fire on Thursday in Virginia Beach.

No injuries were reported.

According to a tweet from the Virginia Beach Fire Department, the fire occurred in the 5300 block of Yellow Knife Court at the Indian Lakes Apartments.

Officials say when crews arrived on the scene they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a second-story attic and spreading quickly to other units. The fire was marked under control at 7:44 p.m.

According to officials, 16 apartments have been affected by the fire. It is unknown at this time how many people have been displaced.

There were no injuries reported and Red Cross is working with tenants to secure housing.

One neighbor, Bernie Flores, lives across the street from Indian Lakes He said since he’s lived in the area he’s seen three other fires ignite at the complex.

“One behind that building, another one behind that brown colored building over there and this is the third one that I know of,” he said.

Another neighbor said the whole situation could’ve ended a lot worse.

“That whole building would’ve disappeared within the next five minutes, but with the way they moved and set up – rapid response. So, fantastic job to Virginia Beach fire department,” Jesus Figueroa said.

An Indian Lakes resident, Robert Slosky said he’s seen five fires at the apartments, including his own.

The summer of 2022, his own apartment burned to the ground because of what he called, “irresponsible use of smoking materials.”

He said it only took five days for Indian Lakes and the Red Cross to find him a new home.

“Indian lakes and the Red Cross, they did a great great job.”

That’s why he said whoever is left without a home from Thursday’s fire, shouldn’t have to worry for too long.

“I definitely have faith that Indian lakes will…they’ll do a good job.”

Crews closed Indian River Road between Indian Lakes Boulevard and Ferrell Parkway during the active fire scene.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.

WAVY has covered previous fires at this Virginia Beach apartment complex. On Dec. 27, 2020, fire damaged 24 units at the complex. Investigators ruled the improper disposal of fireplace ashes as the cause.

In the summer of 2020, an overnight fire damaged 16 units at Indian Lakes Apartments. At the time, officials said 22 adults and nine children were displaced. They said the fire appeared to be accidental.
