VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A four-year-old was taken to the hospital after being struck by a stray bullet Friday in Virginia Beach.
A resident at Aden Park and Ebbetts Plaza sent 10 On Your Side a picture of the scene.
The resident said they heard about 10 gunshots.
“I thought it was fireworks again, then when it went so fast, I knew it wasn’t fireworks,” said the resident during a phone interview. “I called 911 and told them I just heard gunshots.”
On Monday morning WAVY-TV 10 contacted Virginia Beach police. Then, a spokesperson with the department confirmed on July 7 someone called for a report of gunshots came in around 10:45 p.m. in the 5100 block of Dandy Court.
When officers arrived on the scene they found a home with multiple bullet holes, but with nobody struck inside.
Police said officers then responded moments later to a 4-year-old with a gunshot wound, on Babney Court, which is just around the corner from the first call. Police said the child was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
Detectives say they believe that a bullet traveled through the home on Dandy Court and hit the child who was nearby. Police say the child was not associated with the home on Dandy Ct.
“I hope they catch the people that shot the little girl,” said a man who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. “Most people who live around this area in this section here are pretty good people.”
Abby Otto told 10 On Your Side, off camera, that the neighborhood off North Witchduck Road is home for a lot of kids, including her 1-year-old.
“They get their feelings hurt and they are firing at everything and everyone in their path,” she said. “That’s not OK. It makes me nervous, especially for my daughter.”
Otto said she is considering moving after seeing the crime scene.
“One more time and I’m done I’m moving,” Otto said. “I’m not doing it.”
No further information has been released at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
