2 adults, 2 children under the age of 12 injured in shooting on Whitney Court in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Police say two adults and two children were injured in a shooting Sunday evening.

Officers responded just before 5:30 p.m. for a report of “gunfire with injuries to a child” in the 3700 block of Whitney Court in Virginia Beach. Police say the scene remained “very active” as the evening progressed.

As officers arrived on the scene, they located another injured child and two adults that were suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. A spokesperson with Virginia Beach police said that both children were under the age of 12.

Emergency Medical Services transported all the victims to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries, which were not considered to be life-threatening, according to police.

Natalie Carrion and Elisa Ormond live at the gated Twin Canal Village Apartments, where the shooting happened.

“This entire year has been nothing but shootings and drive-bys, nonstop,” Carrion said.

They are both moms, and say they worry about their children’s safety, constantly.

“I do not let my kids go outside at all. At all. We have a play park in front of my house, I don’t even let them do that,” Carrion explained.

Ormond says the street near her apartment has been a hot spot for shootings. She says this summer she heard shots and looked out the window to see a man who’d been hit in her back yard.

“The officers were coming up and telling us to back away and whatnot, but he was passed on. After that, I had to help a guy out who came while I was walking out to my car asked for help… and I had to hold his bullet wounds while talking to the police,” said Ormond.

They both agree — one of the biggest problems in the community is a lack of security.

They say the gates don’t require codes like they’re supposed to, and half the cameras don’t work.

“Something has to give. The community has to do something. The rental office has to put in their work. They have to do something to make this a safer environment for our children,” stated Carrion.

No further information is available on the victims, a suspect, or circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation is being actively investigated.
