Two Hampton Roads cities among top 15 on safest U.S. cities list

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach is now ranked among the top 10 safest cities among 180 cities in the United States.

“I think validated is a great word,” said Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate. “We are the 43rd largest city in the country. We made top 10. I think what that tells us [is], we’re a large city, but we have done a fantastic job of avoiding the large city problems.”

WalletHub recently compiled a list of the safest cities in the U.S. in 2024. The study examined more than 180 cities across 41 key indicators of safety, including traffic fatalities, assaults per capita, unemployment rate and percentage of the population that is uninsured.

Virginia Beach ranked as the 10th safest city in the U.S., according to the WalletHub survey, and Neudigate has the stats to prove it.

“Homicides down 57% compared to this time last year,” Neudigate said. “Shooting victimization is down 55%. It’s cut in half. And those are the big numbers that we look at, of course. But when we talk about all part one violent crime — that’s homicides, rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults — [they] were down 17%. So we are definitely going in the right direction.”

Neudigate credits better resources for Virginia Beach’s higher ranking.

“It’s really the technology the city’s invested in over the last four years,” Neudigate said. “It’s the increase in overall cameras. And when we talk about license plate readers and it can be controversial, right, because we’ve heard some of the people that have concerns, but when operated with the proper oversight, they’re solving crime.”

To maintain a good ranking, the chief said his department will keep their eye on the prize — the people.

“It is a year-round every day, 24/7 focus on what could potentially put our citizens and our visitors at risk,” Neudigate said. “It’s identifying those individuals and those locations where there could be potential for violence and making sure that we impact and we interrupt whatever that may be. So it’s focusing on the right individuals that we believe based on our investigations are engaged in pulling triggers.”

Newport News appears further down the list at No. 87. Norfolk is the last city in the Hampton Roads area to appear on the list at No. 98.
