SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A WAVY viewer shared video her home surveillance camera captured of three bears roaming around her home in Suffolk.
The video shows an adult bear visiting the house just off Route 58, in the Dismal Swamp area of the city, around 2:30 a.m. the morning of July 4.
You can see the bear in the driveway hanging out around some trash cans, when suddenly the lights turn on. The bear looks up in the direction of the light, then continues on its way, with two little cubs close behind.
This is just the latest video of a bear sighting in Suffolk shared with WAVY.
Bear sightings rise in Virginia as temperatures get warmer. According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), the smell of food is what typically draws bears to residential areas, specifically, birdfeeders, garbage and pet food. Residents are reminded to secure their garbage and clean their porches to keep bears away from their home. Bears are also able to smell food that’s in someone’s car, so make sure that your car is cleaned out.
