Correction: An earlier news release from the City of Suffolk on August 17 said the structural issues to a building in the 300 block of East Washington Street were storm-related. They later issued a correction confirming they are not.
SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Suffolk Public Works crews placed detour signs after a damaged building closed roads in Suffolk.
The building located in the 300 block of East Washington Street closed the roadway along with parts of Tynes Street at East Washington Street.
The Suffolk Department of Public Works placed the detour signs related to the street closures after the Suffolk Planning & Community Development Department determined that the building is structurally unsound.
As of Saturday, August 22, the building had been demolished and the roadway was reopened.
The city also announced an update on two tornadoes that down in Suffolk on August 4. A total of 114 structures were damaged, ranging from minor to total losses.
One of the buildings is a century-old commercial structure in Downtown Suffolk, located along S. Saratoga Street. It is scheduled to be demolished within the next week to 10 days.
The road closure previously in place will remain in effect from West Washington Street at Main Street to Pine Street, as well as Saratoga Street at West Washington Street to Smith Street.
Sidewalks in several areas also remain closed.
The estimated damage total from the tornadoes in Suffolk is $4.3 million.
