Man found shot to death in Suffolk neighborhood

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Neighbors say they heard from four to seven shots just before a man was shot dead Tuesday morning in the Remington Park community.

Police have identified the victim as Gregory I. Goodman, 20, of Newport News. They have yet to release any suspect information.

Witnesses say they saw a man run to his van and leave. It’s a neighborhood of townhomes just off Shoulders Hill Road near Creekside Elementary School.

When resident Ashley Maseda heard a loud noise she thought it was something else.

“I heard a loud pop about 4, and I looked out and I thought maybe an AC unit had blown.”

And then a few minutes later, “I heard sirens,” she said.

The man’s body was in front of a Honda Accord. A bullet pierced the driver side, right behind the edge of the driver’s door.

The owner, who did not want to be identified, says the driver’s door was open and the car was ransacked, but nothing seemed to be taken. Other residents say someone went through their cars, too.

One woman’s iPod was found a short distance from her car, and police took it as evidence.

Derick Allen has lived in Remington Park for three years and says it’s been quiet, at least up until now.

“This is definitely shocking to say the least.”

Many children live in the neighborhood that opened about 11 years ago.

Maseda says it’s been a good place for kids to grow up.

“The kids roam outside all the time by themselves, they’re safe and happy.”

Her daughter is one of the younger ones, and she’s concerned about safety after the deadly shooting just a few doors away.

“I don’t let her out by herself anyways, I follow her everywhere.”

Some residents mentioned a party in the neighborhood Monday night, but it’s unclear exactly where the victim or his killer came from.

Allen has lived Remington Park for three years, and had to let his son know this was not going to be a typical day.

“I had to explain to him that it’s going to be a little bit different walking out to the bus this morning. You never want to see anything like that where you live.”
