SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Firefighters responded to a high rise building in downtown Suffolk that caught fire Wednesday morning.

City officials said in a news release firefighters were called to the scene of a fire at the Tower 112 building at 112 West Washington Street and the corner of North Main Street shortly before 9:30 a.m.

The three-alarm fire was marked under control shortly after 10 a.m. It was contained to the roof, but the seventh floor sustained water damage and several floors were damaged by the smoke.

“Right now there is heavy damage to the roof and then there is some water damage and light smoke damage to the 7th floor, and as you come down from the floor 7 to 6 and all that it’s just some odor and smoke in there,” said Fire Chief Michael Barakey.

He says the fire was cleared quickly, but it was no easy task.

“We have an older building, a structure built in the late 1900s, we have heavy fire from an elevated position high rise building and it takes aerial ladders and a lot of firefighters to address a fire of this nature,” he said.

No injuries were reported.

Officials said North Main Street from the Godwin Courts Building to the corner of West Washington extending down West Washington Street to Saratoga Street were closed for several hours as crews investigated the fire.

James Powell works in the building. “About 2 blocks away I saw dark smoke, looked like it was way up in the air, and I said ‘gosh I hope that’s not my office building’ and it was,” he said.

The Fire Marshal’s Office will be investigating the cause of the fire.
