NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A substitute teacher at Riverside Elementary School is facing assault charges after an alleged incident with a student on Wednesday, police said.

A parent reported to police that a substitute teacher had pushed her child’s head toward her desk during class.

The substitute teacher, 31-year-old Sharod Smithen, was charged with misdemeanor assault and was served with a warrant on Thursday night, police said.

A spokesperson for the school system confirmed Mr. Smithen was hired as a substitute teacher in September of this year. He has been pulled from serving as a substitute in Newport News Public Schools.

No additional details were released.
